Self promotion

Background We all have quiet periods when we worry about selling enough words to feed the cat, let alone a family. If we're feeling foolish or desperate, we may even resort to advertising. Here are some ideas I tried in the back pages of Campaign, Adline, and New Heritage.

copywriting ads in Campaign
Two clippings from a series of thirteen that I placed in the Index section of Campaign. Maybe I was being too clever – or too stupid – to try it on with thirteen different puns.

The complete list was:

Carbon copy Page boy
Pencil sharpener Letter press
Para trooper Copy cat
Type writer Para medic
Life sentence Type casting
Plum line Word processor
Propelling pencil

These ads in the Services Directory of Adline were rather more successful. I should have realised that the metropolitan types who read Campaign wouldn't be interested in a hick copywriter. We provincial creatives should know our place.

copywriting ad in New Heritage

This block in the Showcase section of New Heritage was a bit of a long shot. It was an attempt to reach the museums/visitor-attraction market – but it only drew one response from someone who went very quiet when he found out how much copywriting costs…

The copy says:

explain yourself
with authority, clarity, passion, and humour

words that engage, inform, and inspire
