Who is the Text Wizard?

The Text Wizard is a small man with glasses. He lives with his noisy family and rattling keyboard in rural middle England on the border between Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

His name is Chas Walton and in a favourable light he looks like this:

Quite qwerty

Inefficient and inexplicable, the qwerty keyboard is the anvil upon which text has been hammered out for more than a century
Imperial 50 typewriter
made in Leicester mid-1930s
But how did such a bizarre layout arise?

The popular explanation is that it was a con-trick devised by Christopher Latham Sholes to slow typists down and reduce jamming on his clumsy typewriters.

Legend has it that the artful Sholes then promoted the slow layout as having been designed for speed.

Not so. Appealing though the myth is, Sholes created the qwerty layout for increased mechanical efficiency. He separated common pairs of letters because jams occurred when adjacent keys were struck in quick succession.

With qwerty, nineteenth-century mechanical typists typed faster.

Words that work

There are far too many words in the world. If you're going to add more, make them work for their living. Put your foot down: insist they capture interest from the outset, hold attention to the end, and finish with a call to action that's as inviting as a gold coin glinting in the gutter.

That’s successful copy – lively, relevant, compelling, irresistible.

So why use a copywriter?

We’ve all got something to say: a product to sell, a cause to promote, a story to tell. So do your story justice. Bring it to life, make your arguments irrefutable, communicate the excitement you feel for your future plans and the magical tricks your product can perform – and be brief.

It’s simple really. You make your copy sing, you avoid the limp, the grey, and the woolly. You refuse to inflate the page with fluff, and you correct every single typographical and grammatical error before your audience does.

And if you want someone to do it for you, you call the Text Wizard.

This pen is for hire

The Text Wizard writes, edits, corrects, proofs, or otherwise enhances any piece of text. He'll create original copy for your website, brochure, advert, speech, report, or proposal – or improve your existing copy.

And if your idea needs researching before it can be committed to paper, so much the better. The Text Wizard is ready for the challenge.

North American copywriting > The Text Wizard smiles whatever the color/colour of your money. Pay him well (and in dollars) and he'll eat rutabaga instead of swede, or change a nappy for a diaper.

Speak with a single voice

How do you maintain consistency within an organisation that relies on many in-house and freelance writers? Simple: you set them some guidelines.

Call it what you will – corporate style guide, editorial style sheet, brand tone of voice – it all adds up to the same thing: every keyboard in your organisation pointing in the same direction. They use the same spelling and typographical conventions and speak with a tone that reflects your market. It's one organisation speaking with a single, unified voice.

Call the Text Wizard today to talk about defining a corporate style that sets you apart from your competitors.
